Back & neck pain

Welcome to The Bowen Centre, providing holistic Bowen therapy for a wide range of symptoms, from back pain and sports injuries to asthma and  hay fever in Wallingford, Oxfordshire.

What is Bowen Therapy? The Bowen Technique is a gentle remedial therapy which is suitable for new born babies, children, adults and the elderly.  It aims to balance the whole person, not just their symptoms. An increasing number of people are turning to bowen therapy to relieve and combat numerous ailments and injuries, including premiership sporting clubs, as it known to shorten recovery time and accelerate healing above other techniques.

The Bowen Technique encourages the body to realign itself; there is no manipulation or adjustment of hard tissue and no force is used or needed.  Unlike therapy involving the manipulation of bone alignment, the Bowen Technique focuses on tendon ligaments and muscles throughout the body and therefore is not as evasive as other techniques, nor is it a form of massage.

The treatment affects the body in ways which promote healing, pain relief and recovery of energy.  The experience of the treatment is gentle, subtle and relaxing and it is these features which make The Bowen Technique so unique.

The practitioner will use fingers and thumbs over precise points of the body to create a gentle rolling movement, over tendons ligaments and muscles, whilst releasing stored energy within the body.  There is no hard manipulation of tissue or cracking of bones and no massage or oils are involved.

A treatment will usually last approximately 45 minutes and most of the work can be performed through light clothing (or directly on the skin).

During the treatment there will be a series of short breaks where the practitioner will leave the room if appropriate.  The patient is left resting to allow their body to respond to the gentle moves that have just been performed.  This rest period is an important part of the treatment and allows the body time to make the subtle and fine adjustments, which help to re-balance, relieve tension and reduce pain.

It is these features which make The Bowen Technique unique.
